No taxation without representation was, I feel, one of the bigger problems with the Bitish relationship with the colonies that caused the colonies to revolt. The British government kept placing retrictions on the colonies without having a representative speak for the colonies and let Britain know what was happening there. the British government knew nothing about the colonial situation because it was an ocean away but continued to make laws that the colonists felt were unreasonable and unjust. Such unjustices according to the colonists included: the stamp act-tax on newspapers, land deeds, dice, card games, and graduation diplomas, the boston massacre- british troops killed american protestors, the tax on tea. the cook common sense by thomas paine also contributed to uniting the colonists and spreading the word that they were being greatly mistreated by their mother country.
No taxation without representation along with the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party had many effects on the Revolution breaking out. Taxes were being placed onto everything. The overthrow of the tea into the ocean was a big ordeal as well as The Battle at Breed's Hill which was mistakenly named the Battle of Bunker Hill. After this battle had taken place, that was the icing of the cake, so to speak. As stated in the text, "there had been too much bloodshed to permit peace or compromise" (pg 45).
Also in response to the question of which do I feel had more of an impact on the Revolution I can't say that one thing was more dominant in creating the revolt then the other because it was a little bit of each outbreak that caused another and that caused another. So I think that all of the events mentioned had their own severe impact.
There were many things that caused the American Revolution. I do agree with what everyone has said about no taxation without representation. The British demanded that the colonists pay taxes. These taxes were demanded when there was no real sort of money in place. Another problem was the stamp act. The stamp at said that the colonist had to pay extra taxes for postage such as newspaper, and land deeds. There were many other things that played a significant role in the American Revolution I feel these were some of the more important ones.
To me the biggest cause of the American Revolution was the French and Indian War, this on top of the taxation without representation really put the colonies over the edge and made them see that they needed to revolt against England. This Chapter clearly showed that the American Colonies were being taken advantage of because of the taxes which Britian set up. These included the Stamp Act, the Sugar Act, and the tax on Tea. Why should the Colonies have to pay taxes when they are not being represented in government? This chapter really refreshed my knowledge of the American Revolution.
In response to Claudia, I could not agree more that the colonies were being greatly mistreated by their mother country, and feel as if they had no other choice but to revolt!
The biggest causes of the American Revolotion illustrated in the text are, taxation without representstion and the Boston Massacre. To me the Boston MAssacure played a bigger role in sparking the American Revolution because it was the first time Americans died for their country. This did not only show liberty but it showed that American could stand on its own without Great Britian. When this occured it was more powerful then any taxation because Great Britan used actual violence against the colonies. When you are attacted you must react and America did by starting the american revolution.
No taxation without representaiton was the first amjor affect that casued the revolution. the goverment was putting very high taxes on diffrrent items. the colonsits were getting mad, becasue they were not getting a say. the britsih wanted to have cpntrol of everyhting and amke sure that everything was being done with britsh godds and workers. The unjustices that were being placed all we incorporated into why this revolution started, the stamp act which was putting taxes on newspapers, land deeds and even dipolmassince u needed the revenue stamp. The boston massacre was another one where in boston there was a demonstration that was the colonists were protesting and this is where crispus attucks was shot for the american liberty.Thomas paine was that last straw thatw as writng about the colonists and how they were being mistreated and that there mother country shoudl be trating them better and giving them a say. I do not think just one of these played a signifigent role in the mids of the colonists i think all combined i feelt they jsut felt by all the differnt things that there country was doing to them was unreasonable ans they shoudl have a say and every little thing that happened affected them adn make them even angrrier than they already were.
I agree with what everyone said here that the no taxation without representaion was the firstr string to making the colonsits mad. I also agree with teveryone that it was not jsut one act that made teh colonist revolt it was all together all the littel things that were going on made them mad and hey felt hurt and betrayed by there own country.
I agree with marisa in that no taxation without representation was the first major cause of the revolution. However i feel that every other protest and tax played a major role in what happened in america. When the colonist finally started to rebel the government tried to make the laws and rules even tighter. I feel that the boston tea party was a majore stepping stone in gaining freedom. This was further proving that the colonist were no longer going to stand for being treated in what they felt was an unjust manner
I agree with everyone here as well. The British placing taxes on all goods, including newspapers, land deeds, dice, card games, graduation diplomas, and all paper documents, under the Stamp Act infuriated colonists who believed the reason behind all this taxation was a result of their lack of representation in the British Parliment.
The increase in taxes and British control over everything going on in the colonies, caused the constant revolting and rebelling from the colonists.
The Boston Massacre also played a major role in leading to the Revolution, because it was the first time someone died for "american liberty." The Boston Massacre stirred "passions for personal liberty, justice, and independence" (p.39) So, I think the Boston Massacre was the event that played the biggest role in the minds of the colonist.
I agree with many of the post before me that no taxation without representation was the first major cause of the revolution, although i do not think it was the sole reason-many things attributed to therevolution. The government unfairly treated the colonists and then when they would try to do something about it the government would crack down on them even more. I totally agree with Tori about the boston massacre being that it was the first time people were dieing for what they believed in and trying to get justice played the biggest role in the colonist point of view.
I agree with Tori and believe that no taxation without representaion was one of the major causes of the revolution. In need of money, the British government taxed colonists on everyday items such as molasses and sugar. The Stamp Act was passed to require colonists to pay extra for newspapers, landdeeds, and card games. The Stamp Act and Quartering Acts were passed by Britain to demonstrate the authority they had over the colonists. Colonists becaame infuriated because they continued to have no representation in congress. I agree with Kelly and believe that, though tragic, the Boston Masscare helped to stir feelings of justice, liberty, and independence in the minds of the colonists.
As everyone else has mentioned, taxation without representation was one of the biggest reasons colonists became angry. It is important to remember the Stamp Act, which required colonists to pay more for things such as newspapers, dice and even card games. Taxes on such things seems ridiculous and the colonists were fed up, as Diana stated. The description of what would happen to a rebel against the British Crown was unbelievable. The ability for human beings to do that to other humans is sickening. The British Parliament was taking advantage of the colonists, as Ashley pointed out. I could not agree more with this point.
I think Trish summed up nicely all of the taxes that were put in place on the colonists. (I also think it is important to note that the reason the colonists were being taxed was because England's national debt was doubled because of the French and Indian War. In many respects, this can be viewed as the first cause to the Revolutionary War and the events that followed were like dominoes or snow piling up.) The colonists viewed these taxes, especially the Quatering and the Stamp Acts as completly unfair. The phrase "No Taxation without Representation" came about, as well as, Thomas Paine's "Common Sense". These were published to open up the eyes of the colonists that they were being mistreated. However, I do not think it was until the Boston Massacre that the majority of the colonists realized that breaking away from the "mother country" was essential. The chapter ended with the signing of the Declaration of Independence which then led to the Revolutionary War.
I think Christina was right, that the reason why the colonists were being taxed was because of England's debt and how it doubled after the French and Indian War. No taxation without representation, was a huge problem for the colonists. The goverenment was placing restricions on the colonies such as the Stamp Act in 1765 and the Boston Tea Party. Like everyone else stated, the Boston Massacre was a start to the Revolution (the American protests). The Americans for the first time began to stand up for American liberty and justice. At the end of this chapter the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776.
The French and English settlers argumented about boundries and territories between the whole Ohio Valley region, the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. These disputes of the French and Indian war made cause of the American Revolution.
Throughout chapter 4 its main focus displays the foundations of freedom. In sum The Declaration of Independence was the resulting document in this chapter. "The declaration of Independence, which not only outlined the grievances against Birtain and delcared the colonies free and independent, but also incorporated John Lockes doctrine of unalianable rights, including life and liberty". With this document American colonies were determined to be nothing less to be an independent republic and the British and the French had no say in this agreement.
I agree with what Trish and mostly everyone said. No Taxation without Representation was a cause of the revolution. Various taxes were raised. Parliament was taxing the colonists but would not allow them to distribute their own money, making colonists financially dependent on England. They also prohibited colonists trading with other countries. They even limited the manufacturing of some items. The stamp act was also a cause of the revolution. It added more taxes on paper products, which include a great amount of things, diplomas, newspapers, deeds etc. These things are just showing that overall cause of the revolution.
I agree with everyone that no taxation without representation was definitely one of the biggest causes of the revolt of the colonists. The British were trying to raise money through these taxes. Since these taxes affected everyone I feel they were the main cause of the problem. As Trish stated the Stamp Act also added to the problems. I think the E fact about the Boston Massacure is a great thing to talk about with the students because it shows how history can be subject to others opinions. It is good to teach them about propaganda and how a simple picture can show something completely different than what actually happened. I agree with Christina that the Boston Massacre was the first time the colonist really began to realized things needed to change. Finally the revolution came about and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
I absolute agree with the majority on this! The colonists were fed up with all the taxes placed on them by all these faceless Kings they’ve never met. And to make matters worse is that the poor colonist had no say in their future. No Taxation without Representation! How in the world will you expect people to follow your leadership without even asking them what their opinion is? The colonists were frustrated and trouble was brewing by the arrogance of the leadership at the time. No Taxation without Representation! It’s an outrage! The citizen of a country should have the right to say no more! It was a bad situation for everyone that it was best for each side just to go their separate ways. It was not working out anymore. It was time to move on. Breaking up is always hard to do but on this occasion, America was being held back! No Taxation without Representation!
I believe that the main cause of the revolution was "No Taxation Without Representation." The Britist were controling the import and export of goods, and were committing many injustice against the colonists.
I agree with the comments that everyone made about the primary caused of the revolution. The British were abusing the colonists, and imposing high taxes on them. They were unjust, which caused the colonists to rebel aganist them and boycott English goods.
